What is a Natural Deterrent for Pigeons and Other Birds?

Pigeons are common birds that can be found nearly in every part of the world and they share habitat with humans as well. However, most people are fond of keeping and feeding them, but some people may not be comfortable with the damages they can cause.

They love to live in open places and landscapes and they do not cause harm to crops or plants, but they can be so annoying to home owners and apartment dwellers. This is because their droppings are acidic and can be harmful to metals, machineries and buildings. The droppings, feathers and nests of these birds carry harmful disease, which can lead to serious hazards for humans and other birds. Eliminate birds attractions

One of the best ways to keep a pigeon away from your home or garden is to make them less attractive to be there, get rid of any standing water, which can be their source of drinking and bathing, also make sure that all trash is adequately covered and inaccessible. Birds love to make their nest around enclosed and structured area, therefore block small holes, cut branches, and use cloth to fill empty holes in the porch and roof. Remove existing nest, this will discourage them from coming back.

Use bird predator objects

Birds are mostly afraid of several things; some of their natural predators are cats, owls and larger birds. Therefore placing objects in the shape of these predators where the pigeons frequent can deter them from landing or nesting around there, example of this is a scarecrow. The objects can be in the form of metal, wood or other materials that can withstand outdoor environment. Make sure you move this object around every few days, before the birds get familiar with it and begin to ignore it.

Use bird spikes on your roof

Bird spikes is also another way to deter pigeons and other birds from coming to your yard, spikes are firm and sharp rows of barbed wire making it difficult for pigeons to remain o the roof. Using bird spike is an economical and time saving method as no bird dares land on those sharp thorns. You can also place the kit in many places outside the roof and corridors such as windowsills, fences and anywhere flat that birds can perch on.

Use bird nets or trap

Using bird trap or net is an effective humane method to deter the presence of pigeons and other birds around you. Once they notice that they get trapped every time they visit your home, they will definitely look for another abode. All you need to do is to put a bait usually nuts wheat, millet, corn or fruits inside the trap; once the trigger is hit, the door will shut and they get trapped. After this, you may release the birds far from your home.

Use of Pets Like Dog or Cat

Pigeons just like other birds are scared of dogs and they even detest cats more. Therefore, having a pet at home to prowl around can definitely discourage them from coming to your home again.
